FAMILY-RUN & LOCALLY OWNED SINCE 1875

Craig & Beverly History

The present business was formed when the long standing funeral businesses of John R Craig and W & G Beverly amalgamated which brought together in excess of 200 years and 5 generations of combined experience within the profession.

John R Craig

Alexander M Craig (carpenter and joiner) founded the business in Kintore back in 1882. At around the same time, since he had all the material to make the coffins, he also became what was commonly known as the local undertaker. Upon his passing in 1905, John Robertson Craig (John R Craig) took over the reins until his passing in 1954. The business was then continued by John Alexander Craig and his sons, Harold and David, both served their apprenticeships and eventually took over the running of affairs, working alongside their father until he died in 1987. In 1995, further premises were built at 7 Constitution Street in Inverurie, which were then refurbished and extended in 2017.

Harold and David, in turn, retired in 2004 and 2012, respectively. The business has now passed through five generations with David’s daughter, Marie-Louise and her husband, Sean, continuing to run the business today.

W & G Beverly

The Beverly funeral business was started at Cottown of Druminnor, Rhynie in 1875 by John Beverly who was a Joiner, Millwright and Undertaker. He also raised a family of eleven children and his 4th child, William, after travelling the world, came back to the Cottown around 1918 and took over the running of his father’s business.

William’s youngest son, George took over the business in 1953 and was joined by his sons, William (Bill) and George in 1970, with their sons, William, Graham and Brian joining in 1989. In 1999, the business of Insch funeral director, Robert (Bert) Riddel (previously Souter’s), was acquired and the restrooms and office on George Street in Insch remain very much part of today’s business.
